Eric and I spent almost two weeks in Hawaii, visiting Lahaina in Maui and Kona on the Big Island.
Jan 23-29 - Lahaina, Maui
After three flights we still had to get to the other side of the island to reach out hotel. It was after 10:00 pm when we got there (3:00 am eastern time). We crashed.
Our whale watching adventure was amazing. Thousands of whales migrate to Hawaii for the winter. You can always see them in the distance. We came across a groups of four or five whales, one female being courted by four males. The males are constantly bashing into each other to win the female. In the distance I did see two whales completely breach out of the water.
I rented a bike one day and rode a difficult 50 miles. I wasn't used to the hills and wind.
Jan 29 - Feb 3 - Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii
Our big adventure was driving around the entire island. You are in four or five climate zones during the trip, from the arid western shore, to the snow capped mountain, to the plush eastern side and the eerie volcanic area.
While walking I twisted my ankle and suffered the rest of the day. I was lucky I didn't break it.

Here are some of the whales we saw while whale watching
Here's a good shot of a whale breaching. Ignore the hand on its tail.
There are always rainbows in Hawaii

Walking by Kilauea Volcano - notice the steam rising from the earth
This is what we expected to see, but there was no lava flowing
We caught the sunset as we returned to Kona
I bought a beautiful lei at the farmers market. I told the waitress it was my birthday so I got a free dessert.
The lei lasted for five days, and I gave it to the flight attendant on the way home.
